World Literature series #6: The Tale of Genji

Next up in the World Lit series from Annenberg Learner is the medieval Japanese "novel" (perhaps the world's first) called The Tale of Genji written by noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century. It recounts the tale of a son of the Japanese emperor, known as Hikaru Genji.

Click on the illustration of Genji below to watch the excellent video about The Tale of Genji at learner.org. At their site you can also read excerpts from the novel and explore a map, timeline, and slideshow about it.
